why 100?

I have wondered for a long time why people make regular cars able to go 100 miles per hour.
I mean no where on earth is there a place where it says speed limit 100mph. if people couldn't go 100 then there wouldn't be very much speeding. My question to you is why are cars able to go 100mph.

You used to be able to go whatever speed you wanted to it Montana. Now sadly the speed limit is 90mph. However, if you break this speed limit the fine is 5 dollars. People in Montana realize that it takes forever to get anywhere in their state and are forgiving of those who try to minimize the driving time.

So you could drive 100 mph in Montana for five dollars. Now that would be worth making every car capable of such speeds.

i think it is a matter of mechanics
or physics. say i have a car that can go 100 miles an hour on flat land like the eastern shore. if i go to lookout mtn tn and try to get up it with the same car i may be able to go 25 miles per hour, because it is so steep. if my car was made to go 50 mph on flat land it would only be able to go up lookout at about 12.5 mph which would be very slow and annoying.

Very true Phildirt...12.5 mph would be annoying, but I have driven behind many a folks who drove 10mph up AND down the mountain.

On another note, most speedometers are .01% to 5% inaccurate. So, if you were in Montana and were driving 100 mph, you technically are only going 10 mph. Not bad, huh? (until you get in a wreck)

Correction: You'll be going about 5mph over, not 10mph.

it's always good to have that reserve power under your hood just in case you have to outrun a tidal wave or something. because you just never know what could suddenly turn up and make "law-abiding citizen" a complete joke.

Annie, correction what if the bad guy can go 150? see if you only go 50 then you wouldn't have to run cause you would be going the same speed as the bad guy. Therefore the bad guy wouldn't make any progress on catching you. So your thoery doesn't work...no affence
